About the Shoreline Jazz Quartet
The SJQ features Mike Bimonte on drums, Deepak Cyril D’Souza on saxophones, Rich Meyers on vibraphone, and Steve Roane on acoustic bass. SJQ have been playing together in different combinations for several years. They play an eclectic repertoire including jazz standards and the music of more modern composers. SJQ has recorded and performed tributes to jazz greats Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Pat Metheny and most recently an album of music for the Holidays.
For this performance, the quartet explores the music of two of jazz's most influential and contrasting voices: Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk. Evans brought a lyrical, impressionistic style shaped by classical harmony, subtle interplay, and introspective beauty. Monk, by contrast, was angular, percussive, and delightfully unpredictable, creating music filled with surprising rhythms, dissonant colors, and unforgettable melodies. Together, they represent two very different paths through modern jazz. One elegant and flowing, the other bold and idiosyncratic, yet both profoundly influential on generations of musicians.
SJQ’s performances are enriched by the group’s diverse backgrounds—Bimonte’s decades-long drumming career and major stage appearances; D’Souza’s dual life in medicine and music; Meyers’ conservatory-trained vibraphone artistry; and Roane’s experience spanning more than 7,000 performances and international tours. Together, they bring an eclectic mix of jazz standards and contemporary compositions to life at venues along the shoreline.
